July 18, 2022 – Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma woodhouseii)

Found in the southwestern United States and central Mexico, these jays inhabit woodlands, scrub, and some parks and suburban areas. They eat invertebrates and fruit in the summer and mostly nuts and seeds in the winter and also feed on some small vertebrates and the eggs of other birds. Pairs build their cup-shaped nests in small trees or shrubs from twigs, rootlets, fine plant fibers, and hair. Females incubate the eggs and both parents feed the chicks.
