April 27, 2017 – Azure-breasted Pitta or Steere’s Pitta (Pitta steerii)

These pittas are endemic to the Philippines. Their diet is not well known, but includes worms and small insects, which they spend much of their time foraging for on the forest floor. Little is known of their breeding habits, though they call frequently in April and June and juvenile birds have been observed in June and July. They are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss in their small range.
