March 31, 2017 – Red-knobbed Coot or Crested Coot (Fulica cristata)

These coots are found in southwestern Europe, parts of southern and eastern Africa, and Madagascar. Their diet is mainly aquatic vegetation, but also includes small animals and the eggs of other water birds. Most of their time is spent in and around lakes, lagoons, ponds, and other bodies of fresh water. They become highly territorial during the breeding season, when males and females build floating nests from aquatic plants and dry leaves. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks.
