March 22, 2017 – Masked Shining-parrot, Masked Musk Parakeet, Masked Musk-parrot, Masked Parakeet, Yellow-breasted Musk Parrot, Yellow-breasted Shining-parrot (Prosopeia personata)
These parrots are found only on Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu, though they may have previously been found on nearby Ovalau as well. Soft fruits, including guavas, figs, and bananas, make up the majority of their diet, along with flowers, seeds, berries, and some insects. They nest in cavities high in the treetops, sometimes enlarging the holes with their beaks. Females typically lay at least two eggs per clutch. They are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to loss of their forest habitats and the large trees they use for nesting. Competition from the introduced Crimson Shining-parrot and some capture for the pet trade are also thought to be threats to their population.
