March 18, 2017 – Violaceous Euphonia (Euphonia violacea)
These birds are found in northeastern and eastern South America. They eat mostly fruit, along with some insects and nectar. Their digestive systems are specialized for their frugivorous diet, allowing them to eat berries while passing the seeds through quickly. This makes them important seed dispersers for mistletoe. Males and females both gather nest materials, but females do most of the construction, building round nests with side entrances. Both parents feed the chicks, which take 17 to 24 days to fledge because of their low protein diet.
