January 15, 2017 – White-throated Bee-eater, Black-crowned Bee-eater, or Eastern White-throated Bee-eater (Merops albicollis)

These bee-eaters are found in western and central Africa, with a breeding range that stretches from Mauritania east to Yemen and a non-breeding range from The Gambia south to Liberia and east to Kenya. They eat mostly flying ants and beetles, along with honeybees and other hymenopterans, flies, dragonflies, and various other insects. Nesting alone or in small colonies, they are cooperative breeders with helper birds assisting pairs with chick care.
