January 9, 2017 – Semiplumbeous Hawk (Leucopternis semiplumbeus)

These hawks are found from southeastern Central America to northwestern South America. Little is known about them, though they are thought to hunt lizards, snakes, and possibly small mammals and birds, dropping onto their prey from perches. They probably build platform nests from sticks, high in the canopy. There have been sightings of them in Peru, which could mean there is a new population there, or could be evidence of an undescribed species.
