December 31, 2016 – Australian Ringneck, Mallee, Port Lincoln, Banded, or Cloncurry Ringneck, Twenty Eight Parrot, or Buln Buln (Barnardius zonarius)

These parrots are found in much of Australia, excluding the north and east coasts. There are four subspecies, divided into two groups. The Mallee group is found in the east and has a mostly green head and neck. The Port Lincoln group is found in central and western Australia and tends to have a dark-colored head. Foraging mostly on the ground and sometimes in trees or bushes, they eat seeds, fruits, flowers, nectar, and insects. Females incubate their eggs in tree hollows while males bring them food. When the chicks hatch, both parents feed them.
