December 19, 2016 – European Crested Tit or Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus)

These tits are found across most of Europe, including the northern parts of Scotland. Their diet is mainly small insects and larvae, but also includes seeds and fruit outside of the breeding season. Often seen in small groups made up of one or two breeding pairs and several juvenile birds, they also form foraging flocks with other tits and small songbirds. Monogamous pairs excavate or enlarge tree cavities where females build small nests and incubate the eggs. Both parents feed the chicks.
