November 6, 2016 – Slaty-tailed Trogon (Trogon massena)

Requested by: @dogmart

These trogons are found from southern Mexico, south through Central America, to northwestern South America. They spend much of their time perched quietly, making short trips to catch insects or grab fruit. Cavity nesters, pairs excavate rotten tree trunks and termite mounds. Though they don’t line the nest chambers, they fill them during incubation with regurgitated seeds. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks.
