These ducks are found in freshwater wetlands of most of western North America and parts of western South America. They eat seeds, aquatic plants, various invertebrates, and zooplankton, dabbling at the surface or submerging their heads to feed. Nesting on the ground, females conceal their nests with matted vegetation, entering through tunnels. They lay nine to twelve eggs, incubating them alone, then leading the ducklings to water soon after they hatch.
