February 14, 2016 – Luzon Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba luzonica)
These doves are found only on three islands in the Philippines, including Luzon. They eat seeds, berries, and various invertebrates, foraging on the forest floor. Building nests from twigs, roots, and grasses in low trees or bushes, both parents incubate the eggs with males usually incubating during the day and females at night. They also share parenting duties after the chicks hatch, feeding them with crop milk, a nutritious substance produced in both parents’ crops. They are classified as Near Threatened due to habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting, and trapping for the pet trade.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
