January 23, 2016 – Green-crowned Plovercrest (Stephanoxis lalandi)

Found in southern Brazil, these small hummingbirds eat nectar from native and introduced flower species. Females lack the purple plumage of males and have smaller green crests. The violet-crested variety (loddigesii) is now usually considered a separate species, though both were previously known as subspecies of Plovercrests.
