January 5, 2016 – Coal-crested Finch (Charitospiza eucosma)

These finches are found in parts of Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil in cerrado and caatinga habitats. They are omnivorous, eating mostly grass fruits and arthropods. When in mixed species flocks they often behave as lookouts, perching in trees to watch for predators. Both parents construct the nests and care for the chicks. They are classified as Near Threatened, due to habitat loss and collection for the wild bird trade.
