November 25, 2015 – Rufescent Tiger-Heron (Tigrisoma lineatum)
Requested by: @taylorrbranham
These herons are found in tropical swamps from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. Their diet includes many kinds of fish, aquatic insects, amphibians, crustaceans, and reptiles. Hunting by standing motionless near bodies of water, sometimes for hours at a time, they strike suddenly with their long necks to capture their prey. They have also been observed using bait, such as bread, to catch fish. Wild breeding has not been well studied, but in captivity the females incubate the eggs and both parents feed the chicks.
