November 3, 2015 – Grey-hooded Parrotbill, Dusky Parrotbill, Crested Parrotbill  (Paradoxornis zappeyi)

These small babblers live only on a few mountains in Sichuan and western Guizhou in central China. They feed mainly on small insects and seeds. Bamboo seeds may be a particularly important of their diet. Usually these birds stay in a small elevation range, but when bamboo dies off or there are harsh weather conditions, they may move up or down the mountain to reach more fertile bamboo forests. They live in small flocks and build relatively large cup-shaped nests of bamboo leaves, moss, and fine grass. These birds are classified as Vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation in their limited range.
