October 8, 2015 – Crested Auklet (Aethia cristatella)

Requested by: @gepwin

These small stocky seabirds are found in the northern Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. They feed on krill and other small marine animals by diving under the surface of the water. One of their most notable features is a large hanging crest present in both males and females. Both sexes prefer mates with large crests. Their plumage is reported to have a distinct smell of tangerines. During the breeding season they form colonies on small coastal islands, which can include as many as one million birds.
