August 22, 2015 – Eurasian Magpie, Black-billed Magpie, Common Magpie, or Magpie (Pica pica)
Found throughout much of Eurasia and into parts of northwest Africa, these corvids eat small animals, eggs, invertebrates, and some plant foods. They sometimes pick ticks off of livestock and store food in the ground for the winter. Early in the year, they often gather in large groups called parliaments, possibly to find mates before the breeding season. Both parents construct the nests together, with males gathering material and females usually doing most of the building.
