June 25, 2015 – Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator)

Requested by: derbytup

These diving ducks are found in the north of North America, Europe, and Asia during the breeding season. Outside of the breeding season, they are highly migratory and can be found all across the northern hemisphere. They feed primarily on fish, as well as crustaceans, insects, and tadpoles. When fishing, these ducks sometimes use cooperative hunting methods, with groups driving schools of fish into shallow areas where they can be easily snatched from the water. Females nest on the ground, lining a small depression with down and laying 7 to 13 eggs.
