June 14, 2015 – Grey Falcon, Blue Hawk, or Smoke Hawk (Falco hypoleucos)

Requested by: antennas–to–heaven

These rare falcons are found only in Australia. The majority of their diet is made up of birds, although they also eat some small mammals, reptiles, insects, and carrion. Often seen in small groups of adults and several of their first-year offspring, they usually hunt by dropping from a perch, or sometimes catch their prey in flight. They use abandoned nests of other raptors or corvids, often reusing them for several years. Classified as Vulnerable, their population is estimated at under 1,000 birds.
