May 24, 2015 – African Penguin, Black-Footed Penguin, or Jackass Penguin (Spheniscus demersus)

Requested by: wriftbird

These penguins are found on the coast of Namibia and South Africa, nesting mostly on offshore islands. They feed on small fish, including anchovies and sardines, that they catch while swimming, and sometimes eat small crustaceans as well. The only species of penguin that lives exclusively in Africa, they are also the only penguins that breed there. They form huge, noisy, breeding colonies, nesting in burrows or under bushes and large rocks. Like all penguins, they are monogamous and form close life-long bonds with their mates. Both parents care for the chicks.
