April 9, 2015 – Ural Owl (Strix uralensis)
Requested by: taylorrbranham
These owls are found throughout much of northern Europe and Asia. They eat rodents and other mammals, birds, frogs, and insects, hunting mostly from perches and storing excess food in caches or their nests. Their exceptional hearing allows them to locate mammals under almost a foot (30 cm) of snow. Forming lifelong pair bonds, they nest in natural tree or rock cavities, holes in buildings, stick nests built by larger birds, and artificial nest boxes. During nesting, the males do most of the hunting while the females incubate the eggs.
