April 8, 2015 – Blue Bonnet (Northiella haematogaster)

Requested by: taylorrbranham

These colorful parrots are found in the central and eastern parts of southern Australia. They feed primarily on plants, fruits, and insects. There are four subspecies, each with slightly different plumage. Blue Bonnets form permanent mating pairs, but often forage in small groups that include other parrot species. They nest in tree hollows, the female sitting on the eggs while the male brings her food until the chicks hatch. Blue Bonnets can be extremely aggressive, especially in captivity, and have been known to attack birds larger than themselves.
