March 31, 2015 – Cinereous Vulture, Black Vulture, Monk Vulture, or Eurasian Black Vulture (Aegypius monachus)
Requested by: taylorrbranham
These large vultures are found across Eurasia. Like most Vultures, they feed on carrion, but are also capable of killing small or wounded animals. They are the largest raptors in Europe, with a wingspan of up to eight or nine feet (2.5 to 2.95 meters). They also have a very long incubation period, up to 57 days. One of the rarest European raptors, they are classified as Near Threatened due to poisoning, shooting, and nest destruction, as well as a reduction in available food sources.
