February 27, 2015 – Common Grenadier or Violet-eared Waxbill (Uraeginthus granatinus or Granatina granatina)

These estrildid finches are common in the dry areas of southern Africa. They feed on seeds, small invertebrates, fruit, and nectar. Common Grenadiers are social and are often seen in small flocks. They form lifetime pair bonds and both sexes share in nest building and egg incubation. Their oval nests’ thick walls are constructed from grass stems, then lined with soft green grasses and feathers.
