January 25, 2015 – Red-throated Loon (Gavia stellata)
Red-throated Loons are the smallest of all the loon species. They are found in northern Canada and Eurasia, wintering along the coastlines of North America, Portugal, and parts of Asia. Like all loons, the red-throated feeds on both fresh and saltwater fish, however these are the only loons which will gather fish far from the nest, bringing food to their chicks from distant bodies of water. They build their nests either on the shoreline, from grasses, or in shallow water, from aquatic plants. Red-throated loons do not need to paddle along the water to fly, like other loons, but instead are capable of taking off from dry land.
